Skinny Figgy Bars!
Yay, to another submission to They Draw and Cook! This fancy recipe is for the year of the fig recipe contest hosted by the California Fig Commission....honestly, as much as I would love the cash prize it would awesome to get a year supply of figs...I mean really.

UPDATE: This Illustration won Second Place, thank you Fig Commission!

Anyway, this one took longer than the others because I felt a bit burnt out on kitchen ideas. I love kitchens, but I always want to draw the same ones. I has to look at Dwell and UnHappy Hipster (yes there is irony in this) for ideas. I also went to the Cloisters this weekend with my mom and took lots of pictures of details in the tapestries and paintings. I tried showing JJ my pictures from the trip, but all I have are really zoomed in images of pieces of things that have no context. At least I am not pretending to be a photographer. In fact, I held back from taking any pictures of the water, skyline, or anything else because I figured JJ and I would go back and SHE would take the real pictures.
Happy this one is done, happy that I am going to pick up my printer tomorrow...again (long story), and happy to slowly resume the children's book. I had to put it down because of this contest and because I am training for the North East Regional Barista Competition at the last minute....as usual. It will be great I'm sure, but until it is over I have a low grade sense of impending doom. I hate performing.
Ok, more to come!

What I been doin'
New and improved portfolios and promo book of greeting cards
Look the window in the front, which is perfect for a little illo and contact info. (These portfolios happen to photo albums, but they are hinged, which means they are perfect for portfolio's. Additionally, they come in a million different colors, sizes, layouts, and the best part is that they do not cost $100 a piece....which is insane by the way)
Detail shots of the portfolio. We went for a landscape layout as it is a bit more contemporary. I hope in the future to have an ipad for local clients to see my work, but at the same time there is something so satisfying about paper.
Where I want to live.
The complete model for the new hot cup jacket...aka java jacket. It is going to have a lovely design on the outside and the inside for reversibility.
And some details of the little sample book of greeting cards. I have a complete book I put together of all the offerings, but it is way fatter...because I now have over 50 cards....that's right Hallmark eat your paper heart out!!
Ok, now its time to mail the portfolios.

Lost on the Internet
I am working on becoming more visible on the internets. I have been consumed with this idea, but I am a little tied to the greater designers who will assist me. Etsy is, as my design partner calls it, is a mall...and people can get distracted or overwhelmed by other sellers. Big Cartel is nice, but I have to really focus on setting up a shop and $10 a month is kinda steep....I am cheap right now. I am going to try the free version first and upgrade. Other changes include a website with a blog built in....I also feel silly for not having that to begin with. I am going over the wordpress and my designer will be helping to figure out how that will look. I like my website, but I hate the scroll and click crap. I want people to be able to see more on one page.
Ok, so being bogged down by big projects and coffee shop stuff has made it hard to do anything creative....so I made 5 new cards. The first is above and there will be more tomorrow! I will post them on etsy.....so don't get lost. If you happen to stop and ask for directions...don't ask the squirrel, he is a shifty one.

Pooloue
A commission for a lovely family. The woman's niece has an imaginary restaurant that she is really into. It sounds like she loves to cook and might actually find a passion in being a restaurant owner. Anyway, her aunt commissioned a sign for restaurant which is a french bistro. So, Pooloue is in a hand drawn font and next to it is a little drawing of the girl and a chicken....so french you know. I tried to make the colors as Provencal as possible with blues and yellow, but no sunflowers. Lavender is very french as well so I included a little bit of that for some extra French charm.
