different chicken a little more clarity
Further refinements. The type at the bottom was not working so I went with a futura extra condensed. I may still play with the size there needs to be some printing tests. I also changed the chicken to one of the ones from the other ad. I likes a fuller bodied chicken. That is really all for now. I am sure there will be more adjustments but that remains to be seen. I have decided it is much better to be crazy and then be reined in than to be asked to be a little looser and more fun. I have been worried about this lately...and have become more uptight because of it...go figure. So, I am working on just using my drawing skills to benefit my design. I don't know what it is, but I was so scared about using illustration that I went vector and got got boring. No more! Ok, off to do the never ending train of work.

Funky Chicken
It was brought to my attention that I was not having a good time with this Kraft thing. In class I presented and all I heard was "concerns" about this and that. Then other people presented, not computer mock ups, but sketches. I had worked to completion on these recipe cards and our prof liked them about as much as burnt toast. I was angry and I was getting angrier and more frustrated as the class went on. I hate not liking a class and I feared a repeat of 3rd quarter where I was angry and did not know how to express it without blowing up or breaking down. So I did what a mature person would, I did not walk out in a huff, I spoke to the teacher after class. me: "This isn't working, is it?" "I just don't feel like you are happy with this directions." "You are bored aren't you?" (It sounded like the beginning of a break up) her: "I have seen your stuff and I was expecting something a little crazy and different." me: "You told me no characters" her: "Oh, did I frighten you." me: "yes, yes you did."
I showed her some sketches and some things I had written and she got excited. She wants me to draw. So without anymore blah blah blah here is the first of 3 ideas I am working on for the ad. They are supposed to be funny, eye catching, and appeal to parents who want to cook like their parents did but in half the time.

Kraft menu cards. collect all 7!
The last week I have been working on these Bruscetta chicken bake recipes. It is one page for a magazine ad and these are the mock ups of what I am going for. We had a week to come up with 7 and we have one more week to get the final and send it off to Kraft. This is not stressful at all. Actually it is really fun, but I have to pretend that is not for a contest. You can look at your work compared to others and say, "wow, what makes mine different? Why would anyone choose mine? There is always someone out there better than me. I like to think I have this beat, but its hard to ignore the air of competitiveness. Anyway, it has been awhile since I have posted and I thought I should share what has been going on. I am focusing on the family market with a specific emphasis on reinventing a classic. The look is vintage with an updated palate. I may do one more funny one something along the lines of "giving your chicken a makeover." I think my problem is finding a balance between making the design fit the target audience, making the client happy, and letting my personality show through.

Onward, upward, and ever twirling towards victory
Two posters for Text and Image the first constructed and the second deconstructed grid. It has to be at least 500 words and personal. I have been working on these for the past week nonstop and I know there are still many many issues. I think the constructed grid has the most resolution right now. This morning I came to the conclusion that I needed to paint my foot blue and scan it into the computer. This was a wonderful idea until I turned the tub blue...oops. Anyway, I think it helped with this pieces.
This one I still needs some more deconstruction in various places. I am also still a bit unsure about hierarchy and area of focus. Even though these are no where near finished I thought I should post something and just show my process. This quarters mission is to figure out design solutions without the use of image or at least my own illustration style. Does my foot count?

Design comes before illustration therefore I am a designer and illustrator...not to mention that people generally stop listening after the first word....were you listening?

Bird on a wire
The latest piece was something I have been concepting for awhile and it finally happened today. I might have to reconsider a thing or two, size variation of some of the birds, but I will show Gary on Wednesday and see what he thinks. I will be posting more tomorrow before the classes begin. It is sad to think that I might be more busy than last quarter to the point that there may not be regular posting. I am going to work really hard to post as I go.
